| Bandeau |
A great choice if you're wearing something strapless, a bandeau bra is more or less the same level all the way round, with a band that's wider than usual. Because of this, underwired versions are generally very supportive (although you can't count on a non-underwired bandeau for support much beyond a B-cup), so the straps are often detachable or dispensed with altogether. |

| Basque |
Reminiscent of a Victorian corset but kinder on the ribs, the modern day basque features lace-up or hook-and-eye fastening, as well as boning or vertical seams for structure and support. It usually - but not always - has cups, and is distinguished by its length: unlike the bustier, the basque goes all the way down to the hips and will sometimes feature detachable suspenders. |
 |
| Bustier |
It looks like a basque, but a bustier is shorter (it reaches down only to the ribs or the waist) and has a different function: its primary purpose is to push up the bust (although it shapes the waist gently at the same time). These days, it's often made with funky mesh panels rather than boning. |

| Balconette |
Very fashionable and consequently much misused, balconette is one of those buzzwords that we hear a lot these days. Here's the official Figleaves definition: half cup, push-up effect, wide-set straps, and horizontal bust line. Often seamed or boned, it creates a great cleavage and a lovely frame-like effect. This is a bra that's meant to be seen.

| Body |
Donna Karan helped to make the body the defining item of the eighties: in those days, everybody owned this leotard-like undergarment with gusset closure. Here in the 21st century, we still love the smooth line it gives under clothes, as well as the toning and shaping effect that the control versions provide, with or without the benefits of underwiring. |
